Spring

Spring is the time when liver’s hot energy is very strong. This will indirectly affect your spleen. In the spring you should choose a diet to have light taste of food, avoid greasy, cold and spicy food.

Do eat:

  • Chive: Spring weather is mixed with warm and cold air. You need maintenance good yang energy. The nature of leek is very temperate, not too hot, not too cold. It is good to use to fend off the cold temperature that’s left over from the winter
  • Spinach: spinach is a good food for nourishing the blood; it has anti-aging effects and enhance one’s vitality
  • Garland Chrysanthemum: Garland Chrysanthemum can clean the waste in your heart and stomach, lungs and stop phlegm. In the spring,it is very refreshing to eat Garland Chrysanthemum. It will relieve constipation and is a good vitamin A supplement
  • Bamboo shoots: Spring is the season when Bamboo’s growth is the strongest; it is very rich in nutrition in this season; it also tastes best in the spring and suitable for use in the spring
  • Honey: Honey is an ideal health drink for the spring. If you drink honey water every morning and evening, it will help you prevent constipation and help you from having colds

Do not eat:

  • Lamb: eating lamb in the spring will generate too much excessive heat energy, people who has a fever or whose yin energy is weak should be especially careful with eating lamb in the spring

Note: if you are diabetic please be careful with fruits honey and sweet stuff. These are just a list of healthy food, they are not a substitute for drugs.

 

Summer

Summer is hot and wet, people tend to sweat more. People also tend to eat a lot of cold stuff, such as ice cream, making their stomachs very vulnerable.  Therefore, the summer diet should be light, nutritious, easy to digest food better, but it’s ok if it is bitter and cold.

Do eat:

  • Green beans: beans help the body with waste detoxification; it is refreshing to the body and help body fend off the hot temperature. Green beans are ideal for the summer
  • Kiwi: Kiwi’s nature is cold and sweet; it helps with medium air energy adjustment; it also stop thirst in people, helps body get rid of excessive heat energy from the weather and calm the soul
  • Bitter melon: Bitter melon can help one to clear eyesight, clear body’s heat energy from the summer, get rid of body’s swelling and also help with waste detoxification. It is one of our favorite vegetables for the summer
  • Cucumber: Cucumber’s nature is cool and juicy. It helps the body to fend off hot temperature. It stops the thirst in people. In the summer it should be eaten raw
  • Tomatoes: Tomatoes not only help body to fend off the hot temperature and stop the thirst in people, but also is powerful at nourishing the lung
  • Lemon: Lemon taste very sour; it stops the thirst in people. It helps the body fend off the hot air and has tocolysis effect and thus protects the babies
  • Watermelon: Watermelon not only help the body to fight the heat, but also stop the thirst and help one pee better
  • Seaweed: Seaweed is rich in iodine, can add a lot of moisture and electrolytes that is lost due to summer sweat
  • Cherry: will nourish the body, should eat cherries and other foods that are high in iron content
  • Luffa: help detoxification and treats sore throat

Do not eat:

  • Chives: for summer chives will cause more angry and excessive hot energy, mostly unfavorable to health
  • Sweets: sweets have high sugar content, it will generate more heat energy. If you eat too much sweets in the summer, it will make excessive sugar in the body, thereby affecting the digestion and absorption capability of the spleen and stomach, causing indigestion , loss of appetite

 

Autumn

Chinese medicine believes humans are part of nature. Man, therefore, should eat different foods during different seasons. Below is what one should eat during autumn:

Do eat:

  • Chestnuts: good for one’s spleen and stomach, kidneys and strengthens one’s waist
  • Jujube: adds to energy to middle qi, nourishing the nerves and blood and makes one sleep better at night (if one is diabetic, please proceed with caution)
  • Cauliflower: good for health
  • Cabbage: lubricates the skin
  • Lotus roots: add protein and various vitamins to the body
  • Eel: lowers blood sugar
  • Carrots: lubricates the skin, good vitamin A supplement
  • Orange: good for one’s lungs and stops phlegm, stops one’s thirst (if one is diabetic, please proceed with caution)
  • Pears: a good source for detoxification, good for one’s lungs and stops phlegm (if one is diabetic, please proceed with caution)
  • Spinach (boiled with water): nourishing blood, good for one’s intestines and stop one’s thirst, adds to yin energy and helps one’s liver

Do not eat:

  • Pepper: During fall, one should not eat spicy food; instead one should eat moist-based food
  • Chives: eat more will lead to too much fire like energy to the body

Winter

In the winter, the Yin energy is strong, Yang energy is weak. Because you are exposed to cold temperatures, your body’s physiological function and appetite will change. You are prone to having dry skin and raw mouth sores. Thus, you should be very careful with your winter diet.

Do eat:

  • Seaweed:  in the winter people tend to suffer from anemia due to iron deficiency; seaweed is rich in iron and calcium supplement; these nutrients can improve the symptoms of anemia
  • Lamb: lamb will aid yang energy; it eat can improve your protection against the cold temperature
  • Ginseng: Ginseng can nourish the body with its essential energy; ginseng tonic is a great drink for the winter, especially for people whose Yang energy is weak, or whose lung is weak
  • Olives: The winter wind is dry; chewing fresh olives can moisturize the throat, stop thirst and get rid of the excess heat energy
  • Pumpkin: pumpkin‘s nature is temperate; it is not too cold nor too warm. It contains pectin that can protect your stomach from suffering; it is very suitable for winter consumption
  • Papaya: During the winter, many people gain weight; papaya  can break down fat cells and therefore is suitable for winter consumption
  • Chicken: chicken meat contains high-quality protein and the kind of lipid what good for one’s protection against the cold temperature; it therefore is a great help for physical winter cold

Do not eat:

  • Bitter melon: Bitter melon hurts yang energy, detrimental to your stomach, is therefore unfit for winter consumption

 

During Menstrual Cycle

What should one eat during one’s period?

Chinese medicine believes that the blood needs to be warmed during one’s period. If one eats something cold, her blood will then stagnate. Therefore, during menstrual period , it is recommended to eat something of warm nature, especially in the winter.

Do eat:

  • Beef: nourishes the spleen and stomach, give more energy to qi and blood and make bones stronger
  • Lamb: makes blood flow more smoothly and prevents osteoporosis
  • Black bone chicken: good for yin energy, good for kidneys, helps blood flow more smoothly
  • Wolfberry (gou qi): good for liver and kidneys, adds essential energy to the body, good for eyes and helps one sleep better at night
  • Longan (if you do not have diabetes): good for one’s appetite and spleen, nourishes the nerves and blood, good for impotence and yang energy

Do not eat:

  • Water chestnuts
  • Ice cream
  • White radish
  • Other cold foods

春季

春季为肝气旺盛之时,肝气旺则会影响到脾,而春季饮食调养宜选择口味清淡的食物,忌油腻,生冷及刺激性食物。

宜食食物:

  • 韭菜:春季气候冷暖不一,需要保养阳气,而韭菜性温,有利于驱寒取暖。
  • 菠菜:、菠菜是一种温和的补血滋阴之品,具有抗衰老和增强活力的作用。
  • 茼蒿:茼蒿有清心养胃,利肺化痰之功效,对人们在春季中提神醒脑,缓解便秘和补充维生素A有益。
  • 竹笋:春季是竹笋生长的季节,这时营养最丰富,口感也最好,适宜春季使用。
  • 蜂蜜:蜂蜜是理想的保健饮品,每天早晚各饮蜂蜜水一杯,即可润肠通便,又可预防感冒。

禁忌食物:

  • 羊肉:春季食用羊肉容易上火,阴虚火旺者及热病患者不宜食用。

夏季

夏季气候署热兼湿,出汗比较多。加之人们喜食生冷寒凉之物,更易伤脾胃。因此,夏季饮食应以清淡,苦寒,营养丰富,易消化的食物为佳。

宜食食物:

  • 绿豆:绿豆的最大作用是清热解毒,消暑醒神,是夏季最佳的食物。
  • 猕猴桃:猕猴桃性味甘寒,可调中理气,生津润燥,解热除烦。
  • 苦瓜:苦瓜可清心明目,清火消暑,消肿解毒,是夏季适宜食用的蔬菜之一。
  • 黄瓜:黄瓜清凉多汁,有清热解暑,生津止渴之功效,夏季宜生食。
  • 番茄:番茄不仅可以清热止咳,而且还有养肺之强大功效。
  • 柠檬:柠檬味极酸,有生津,止渴,祛暑,安胎之功效。
  • 西瓜:西瓜不仅可以清热,还有止渴利尿之功效。
  • 紫菜:紫菜中含有丰富的碘,可补充夏季人们因大量出汗而导致体内流失的水和电解质。
  • 樱桃:夏季养生重在养血,应多吃樱桃等含铁量高的食物。
  • 丝瓜:丝瓜可以清热除烦,凉血,止血,有利于清热解毒和治疗咽喉痛。

禁忌食物:

  • 韭菜:夏季使用韭菜多会引起上火,对健康多为不利。
  • 甜食:甜食含糖分较高,产生的热量也较多。若夏季食用过多甜食,就会化热生火,并使体内糖分过高,进而影响脾胃的消化吸收,引起消化不良,食欲减退。

冬季

在冬季,阴盛阳衰。人体受寒冷气温的影响,机体的生理功能和食欲等均会发生变化。同时容易出现皮肤干燥和生口疮等症。因此,冬季饮食要妥善调理。

宜食食物:

  • 海带:冬季人们容易患缺铁性贫血,因此,补充含有丰富铁和钙的海带可改善贫血症状。
  • 羊肉:羊肉有温阳益气之功效,多吃可以提高御寒能力。
  • 人参:人参可补元气,入冬后进补人参是最佳时节,尤其对阳虚,肺虚者有良效。
  • 橄榄:冬季气候干燥,嚼食鲜橄榄可以润喉,清热,止渴,生津。
  • 南瓜:南瓜性温,所含的果胶可保护胃部免受刺激,适宜在冬季食用。
  • 木瓜:到了冬季,很多人体重增加,而木瓜则有分解脂肪的作用,适用于冬季使用。
  • 鸡肉:鸡肉中含有优质蛋白质和对人体有益的磷脂类,对冬季御寒强身大有帮助。

禁忌食物:

  • 苦瓜:苦瓜味苦,易伤阳气,有损脾胃,冬季不宜食用。

 

 

月经期

中医认为血得热则行, 得寒则滞。 因此建议在月经期吃一些温补的食物, 特别是到了冬季。

宜吃:

  • 牛肉:滋养脾胃,补气血,强筋骨。
  • 羊肉:活络血脉,预防骨质疏松。
  • 乌鸡:滋阴,补肾,养血。
  • 枸杞子:补肝肾,益精气,明目安神。
  • 桂圆(糖尿病者不用):开胃益脾,养血安神,壮阳益气。
  • 菠菜(用开水烫过):补血,止渴润肠,滋阴平肝。

不宜吃:

  • 荸荠
  • 冰激凌
  • 白萝卜等各类寒性食物
